Teach Health :

Raise Initiatives :

Value Equality

HIV and AIDS is a relevant health issue in the Philippines. The country has the highest HIV epidemic growth rate in the world, from 1 in 2008 to 21 in 2015. We believe this trend is caused by the inherent conservative Filipino culture stigmatizing HIV and AIDS, lack of sex education in the general public, and the government’s lackluster efforts in curbing the alarming growth rate.

AIESEC AdMU presents our newest project called tHrIVe, (“Teach Health, Raise Initiatives, and Value Equality”). Our project aims to address the issue of HIV and AIDS in the Philippines in three ways - educating the youth on HIV and AIDS, participating in and creating advocacy projects in line with the advocacy, and volunteering for outreach activities in coordination with our partner organizations.

TARGET SDG

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM

JOB DESCRIPTION

WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM OUR EXCHANGE PARTICIPANTS?

Conduct instructional sessions to key demographic areas throughout Metro Manila.

Create a marketing campaign raising awareness about HIV and AIDS.

Volunteer and participate in at least one awareness initiative of our partner organizations.

Volunteer as peer educators/counselors in HIV testing or shelter sites for at least 50 hours.

Create a fundraising campaign culminating your experience in the project and use the funds raised for donation to HIV shelter sites.

Create an online journal reflecting on your personal encounters with people with HIV.

HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE?

Proficiency in English

English is mostly spoken in Metro Manila. You will be conducting informational sessions to communities, and the subject matter of the sessions are sensitive and controversial. You must portray yourself as an expert of the subject matter, and that requires that you speak English well.

Research about Filipino Culture on Sex and the LGBT+ Community

Knowledge of the economic status of the Philippines on a macro-level, and how the beneficiaries fit on a micro-level, will provide insight on what direction is best for them. Basic knowledge on Philippine markets can reveal what types of resources and programs are available in the country.

Do initial research on HIV and AIDS

Although you will be formally trained in the program on how to be a peer educator, it is supplemental that you do research prior to your exchange. Familiarize yourself with key terms such as transmission, prevalence, and contraception.

Learn how to contextualize your approach to the local people.

You will be in a different country with different customs and cultures. Always gauge the people you interact with. Talking about sex is taboo in Filipino culture, so you will need to learn ways in which you can translate information about sex and HIV in a way that locals will understand and not be offended with.

EP TESTIMONIALS

— Britta Wetzel, Germany

I decided to volunteer at project THRIVE because I am really interested in health related topics. I think it is really important to inform people about the ways of transmission and consequences of HIV and other STIs. I hope that I can help a lot of people while I am in Manila and that I can leave an impact on them. I especially care about young people because they often don't know how they can protect themselves.
