ORIENTATION

HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE?

Brush up on your English!
English shall be used as the primary medium of instruction in communicating with the youth and other partners. You shall also be conducting teaching sessions in communities where the subject matter shall be quite sensitive. Thus, to ensure that nothing gets lost in translation, the project requires that you speak English proficiently.
JOB DESCRIPTION

Do initial research
Although you shall attend learning partner sessions to gain a contextualized understanding about the state of mental health in our country, it is highly suggested that you conduct initial research. You may try finding modules on certain topics of mental health that you would want to discuss, as it is a broad topic. These may come from personal advocacies such as gender identity, and depression amongst others.

PARTNER COMMUNITIES
Provide administrative or logistical aid in programs such as crisis hotlines, and educational lectures through volunteer work in organizations that advocate for mental health

Learn how to contextualize your approach to the local people
You shall be residing in a country with customs and practices that could highly differ from yours. In our society, there is a great stigma on mental health care practices such as seeing a psychiatrist. Unlike other countries, they’ve started to accept that this is a real issue to be talk about. There is still great taboo in discussing this matter. A common saying in the Philippines does go: “What will the neighbors say?” Therefore, you must be able to employ teaching methods where you can discuss mental health in a respectful yet accurate way. Always gauge how to act around your students, and partners.
